THE SHORT VERSION

If you are looking for boxing lessons in Dallas and you have never put on a pair of gloves, you are exactly who our beginner classes are built for. At Pulse Check in Lake Highlands, boxing is taught by Coach Stan, a sports physical therapist and strength coach, so you learn real technique while someone keeps an eye on how your body moves.

This guide to boxing lessons for beginners walks through what a first month looks like, how to warm up, what to bring and how to choose between group classes and private sessions.

Is boxing a good workout for beginners?

Yes. Boxing trains your legs, hips, core and shoulders at the same time, and it asks for coordination and focus on every combination. A round on the heavy bag is short, but it is honest work. Because you control the pace, a beginner can get a hard session without lifting heavy weights or running long distances.

The catch is that boxing is a skill. Throwing hard with poor form loads the shoulder, wrist and lower back in ways they do not like. That is why our first priority is technique, and conditioning comes second. Once the basics feel natural, our HIIT boxing workout shows how a full conditioning session is built.

What your first month of boxing lessons looks like

Week 1: stance, guard and footwork

You learn how to stand, how to keep your hands up and how to move without crossing your feet. It sounds simple. It is also the part most people want to skip, and the part that makes every punch after it better.

Week 2: the jab, the cross and basic combinations

You start throwing the jab and the cross on the bag and on the mitts, then put them together. The focus is on turning the hips and returning to guard, not on hitting hard.

Week 3: hooks, defense and short rounds

Hooks and simple defense, like slipping and rolling, come in once the straight punches look clean. Rounds stay short so your form holds up when you get tired.

Week 4: conditioning rounds

By now the movement is familiar, so we add HIIT style boxing rounds that mix bag work, footwork and bodyweight exercises. This is where boxing turns into a full workout.

A simple warm up before every session

Nobody likes the warm up. Do it anyway. Five to eight minutes is enough to get the shoulders, hips and ankles ready for the first round:

If something feels stiff or painful during the warm up, tell your coach before the first round. Adjusting a drill early is easier than working around a sore shoulder later.

Group boxing classes or private boxing lessons?

Both work for beginners. Group boxing classes at our Dallas gym are high energy and keep you moving, and they are a good way to build consistency. Private or semi private sessions give you one on one feedback on technique, which helps if you are coming back from an injury or want to progress faster.

Our Wellness Program combines the two. Tier 1 includes HIIT boxing classes for $100 per month, Tier 2 adds one private or semi private boxing session a week for $160 per month, and the Ultimate Package includes 8 private or semi private boxing sessions a month for $280 per month. You can compare every option on our pricing page.

Boxing with an old injury

Because Pulse Check is also a physical therapy clinic, we often train people who are managing a knee, shoulder or Achilles problem. One client trains boxing with Coach Stan while rehabbing an Achilles, and says the attention to detail in how he moves makes him feel safe, engaged and challenged.

If you are dealing with pain, start with a conversation. Depending on what is going on, boxing can be adjusted or paired with physical therapy in Dallas so training and rehab support each other. Talk to a licensed physical therapist before you train through an injury.

What to bring to your first boxing lesson

Recovery matters as much as the rounds you put in. Plan an easy day after your first sessions, and ask about our recovery options, like Normatec and red light therapy, if your legs and shoulders feel heavy. You can also pair boxing with strength and conditioning to build the base that keeps you punching well.
